How We Built a Custom Shopify Subscription Block That No App Could Deliver

The Problem

A US-based supplements brand was selling creatine gummies — and crushing it on traffic. But their conversion rate on the product page was underperforming. The culprit? Their subscription app's default block.

The default UI was generic, didn't match their brand, and confused customers at the most important moment — right before they decided to subscribe or buy once. The client had tried every setting inside the app. There was nothing left to configure.

They came to us with a simple ask: "Can you make the subscription experience look and feel exactly the way we want it?"

Why Standard Apps Hit a Ceiling

Most Shopify subscription apps — ReCharge, Skio, Bold, and others — give you a widget you can embed. You can change colors, maybe move some elements. But the structure, the logic, the interaction flow? That's locked behind the app's own code.

You're renting the experience, not owning it.

For brands doing serious volume, that's a problem. Your product page is your most important real estate. Every pixel matters.

What We Built

We reverse-engineered how the subscription app communicated with Shopify's cart and checkout. Then we built a completely custom Liquid section — a proper Online Store 2.0 app block — that:

  • Matched their brand perfectly — fonts, colors, button styles, transitions
  • Used the ReCharge API under the hood, so all subscription logic still flowed through their existing setup
  • Added interaction polish — animated toggle between one-time and subscribe, frequency selector with smooth state changes, clear savings callout

The entire block was built as a reusable OS 2.0 section, meaning their team can move it anywhere on the page using the theme editor — no developer needed.

The Result

Within 60 days of launch, subscription conversion on that product page was noticeably higher. The client attributed the improvement directly to the UX clarity of the new block.

The store now runs one of the cleanest subscription experiences in that category — with a block that looks and functions exactly how the client envisioned, and performance no app could have matched out of the box.

What This Means for Your Store

If your subscription app, reviews widget, or any other tool is limiting what your product page can look like — you don't have to accept that.

Custom Liquid development exists precisely for moments like this. We've done it with subscription blocks, upsell logic, bundle builders, and more.
