Squarespace built its reputation on aesthetics. The templates are genuinely beautiful, the editor is intuitive, and for brands where design is part of the identity — jewellery, homeware, fashion, creative studios — it's been the obvious choice for years.
The migration to Shopify happening among these brands isn't about design getting worse on Squarespace. It's about eCommerce getting more competitive, and Squarespace's revenue tools not keeping pace with what the market now expects.
The Checkout Conversion Gap
Squarespace's checkout is clean and well-designed. It's also not Shop Pay.
Shop Pay has 100 million registered users who complete checkout in a single tap on any Shopify store. No re-entering card details, no creating an account, no friction. Shopify's own research shows Shop Pay converts at a rate 50% higher than standard checkouts. For a design-first brand doing $400K/year, that's a meaningful difference in annual revenue from the same traffic.
Squarespace cannot offer this. It's built on Shopify's payment network and exclusively available to Shopify merchants.
Selling Beyond Your Website
A growing percentage of consumer purchases start on social platforms. TikTok Shop, Instagram Shopping, and Pinterest product pins are where buyers are browsing. Shopify integrates natively with all of them — inventory syncs automatically, orders come into the same dashboard.
Squarespace's sales channel integrations are more limited. Most Squarespace brands are selling on their website and nowhere else. For a brand with strong social presence and high visual appeal — exactly the kind of brand that built on Squarespace — this is a significant missed revenue channel.
Subscription and Recurring Revenue
A monthly candle subscription. A skincare refill programme. A digital membership. Recurring revenue is the most valuable kind, and the brands that build it into their model early have a material advantage in unit economics.
Squarespace has basic subscription functionality. The apps and integrations available for serious subscription businesses — customer portals, dunning management, cohort analysis, subscription pause and skip features — are largely Shopify-native tools. Recharge, Skio, and Shopify's own subscription APIs are built for this in ways Squarespace's equivalent options aren't.
The Design Question, Answered
The concern we hear most from design-first Squarespace users is that Shopify will feel "generic" — that the themes won't have the same visual quality they're used to.
Shopify has evolved significantly here. Dawn, Impulse, Prestige, and several other premium themes are genuinely beautiful and built for high-end brand presentation. Custom Shopify theme development — using Liquid, Shopify's templating language — gives designers at least as much creative control as Squarespace's editor, often more.
Every brand we migrate from Squarespace to Shopify keeps their visual identity. The redesign question is about implementation, not limitation. And the result on Shopify has better conversion performance because the underlying checkout and commerce features are stronger.
What the Migration Looks Like
Squarespace to Shopify is one of the smoother migrations we handle. Product data, images, customer information, and blog content all transfer. We implement 301 redirects for every URL. Squarespace stores are typically less complex than WooCommerce or Magento builds, so the project timeline is shorter — usually 2–5 weeks.
Your Squarespace store stays live throughout. The switch happens when you're happy with the Shopify build.
