There's a version of this conversation that's mostly about costs, and that's worth having. But the more interesting question for a $5M+ brand is what each platform lets you do — and what each platform makes harder.
Both Shopify Plus and Magento Open Source can handle serious eCommerce volumes. The difference is in the developer dependency, the growth features available out of the box, and what happens to your business velocity when your team isn't managing platform overhead.
What Magento Open Source Actually Costs at $5M+
A $5M/year store on Magento typically carries $3,000–$6,000 per month in platform-related spend. That's a server environment configured for your traffic peaks ($500–$1,500/month on managed cloud hosting), a developer retainer for maintenance and the constant stream of security patches ($1,500–$3,500/month), and the extension licenses that keep the store's functionality intact.
That's $36,000–$72,000 per year before a single new feature is built. At this stage, the majority of Magento-specific developer budget goes into maintenance — keeping the existing store running, not improving it.
What Shopify Plus Costs at $5M+
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300/month (or 0.25% of monthly revenue for merchants above $800K/month). At $5M/year, that's $2,300/month in plan fees plus $300–$700/month in apps. The total is roughly $31,200–$36,000 per year. Hosting, security, and platform maintenance are included — there is no server to manage.
The cost comparison narrows at enterprise scale. But the operational difference doesn't.
Developer Velocity
This is the part that's hardest to put a number on but has the biggest commercial impact. When your Magento developer team is spending 60% of their time on maintenance and 40% on new development, your growth rate reflects that. When your Shopify Plus team is spending 10% on platform maintenance and 90% on growth features, the output looks different.
New checkout tests, personalisation experiments, new channel integrations, loyalty programme improvements — these are the projects that move revenue metrics. On Magento, each of these is a development project with setup time, testing overhead, and integration risk. On Shopify Plus, many of them are app installs or configuration changes your marketing team can handle without developer involvement.
Checkout Conversion at Scale
A 5% improvement in checkout conversion on a $5M/year store is $250,000 in additional annual revenue. This is where Shopify Plus's advantage is most measurable.
Shop Pay's conversion advantage over standard checkouts is well-documented. Checkout Extensibility on Shopify Plus allows A/B testing of checkout elements, trust signals, and upsell offers without replacing the native checkout and its conversion optimisations. Magento's checkout, even well-configured, starts from a lower conversion baseline and requires more custom development to improve.
International Revenue
At $5M+ in revenue, international markets are likely on your roadmap if they're not already a reality. Shopify Markets makes expansion significantly more manageable — localised pricing, currency conversion, translated storefronts, and international tax rules all handled from a single store admin.
Expanding to a new country on Magento typically means a new server instance, custom development for the localised experience, and a dedicated project. On Shopify Plus, you can launch in a new market in a week.
When Magento Makes More Sense
Magento Open Source at $5M+ still makes sense in specific situations. Very complex B2B operations with custom pricing logic, multi-step quoting, and deeply integrated ERP workflows. Multi-region operations with genuinely separate inventory pools. Checkout requirements that are complex enough that even Shopify Plus Checkout Extensibility can't accommodate them.
These situations exist. They're less common than Magento agencies represent, but they're real. If your store falls into this category, staying on Magento may be the right call.
For the majority of $5M+ D2C and multichannel brands, the maintenance overhead of Magento and the commercial advantages of Shopify Plus make migration the right decision. The question is usually timing, not direction.
If you're at this scale and thinking seriously about migrating, our team works on enterprise migrations and can give you an honest assessment of what the project would involve.
