You've built an email list. You've got welcome flows, abandoned cart sequences, and campaigns that actually convert. Then you decide to move your store from Wix to Shopify, and the question hits you: does all of that email marketing work die with your old platform?
Short answer: your subscriber list can move. Your automations, templates, and send history can't — not directly. There's no "export Wix Email campaign, import to Shopify Email" button. If you've been putting off a Wix-to-Shopify migration because you're worried about losing years of email work, here's exactly what transfers, what doesn't, and how to rebuild it the right way instead of losing momentum.
What Actually Happens to Your Wix Email Campaigns When You Migrate
Wix Email (formerly Wix Shoutout / Ascend Email Marketing) is a closed system. It doesn't offer an API or bulk export that hands over your automation logic, your campaign designs, or your send analytics in a format Shopify Email can read. When you migrate your store, three things happen automatically and three things don't:
- Moves automatically: Your product catalog, orders, and customer records (if you migrate them properly through an app like Matrixify or a manual CSV import).
- Moves automatically: Basic subscriber email addresses, if you export them as a CSV before you cancel Wix.
- Moves automatically: Marketing consent status, but only if you capture and re-import the opt-in timestamp correctly (more on this below).
- Does NOT move: Your email templates and designs — Wix's drag-and-drop layouts aren't exportable as HTML you can reuse.
- Does NOT move: Your automation flows — welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase sequences all have to be rebuilt from scratch.
- Does NOT move: Historical open rates, click rates, and revenue attribution — that data stays locked in Wix's dashboard.
This surprises a lot of store owners who assume "migration" means everything comes with them. It doesn't. Email is the one piece of your stack that requires manual rebuilding no matter which platform you're moving to.
Method 1: Manual Export and Re-Import Into Shopify Email
If you're planning to use Shopify's native Shopify Email app (free, built into every Shopify plan), here's the process:
- In Wix, go to your Contacts or Ascend dashboard and export your full subscriber list as a CSV. Make sure the export includes email, first name, and marketing consent status.
- Clean the CSV. Remove unsubscribed contacts, duplicates, and any obviously fake or role-based addresses (info@, admin@) that hurt your sender reputation.
- In Shopify admin, go to Customers > Import and map the CSV fields to Shopify's customer fields, making sure "Accepts Marketing" is set correctly for each contact.
- Once imported, go to the Shopify Email app and rebuild your core flows: welcome email, abandoned checkout, and post-purchase follow-up.
- Send a re-engagement campaign within the first 7 days on the new platform. This confirms deliverability and flags any bad addresses before you rely on the list for revenue.
Shopify Email is fine for basic newsletters and simple flows, but it's genuinely limited on advanced segmentation and multi-step automation compared to what you may have gotten used to.
Method 2: Migrate to a Dedicated ESP Instead (Klaviyo or Omnisend)
Most stores doing more than $10,000/month in revenue skip Shopify Email entirely and migrate straight into Klaviyo or Omnisend. Both have direct Shopify integrations and import tools that are far more capable than Shopify's native app. The process looks similar to Method 1 but with two extra advantages:
- Pre-built flow templates that mirror what you likely had in Wix — welcome series, browse abandonment, cart abandonment, win-back campaigns — so you're not designing from a blank page.
- Better segmentation based on purchase behavior, which Shopify Email doesn't support out of the box.
If your Wix store was generating meaningful revenue from email (and most stores that have been running for a year or more are), this is almost always the better move. The subscription cost ($20–$300/month depending on list size) pays for itself the first month your abandoned cart flow recovers even a handful of orders.
What You Lose No Matter Which Method You Choose
Be honest with yourself about these before migration day so there are no surprises:
- Sender reputation resets. A new sending domain or platform means inbox providers treat you as an unknown sender again. Expect a temporary dip in open rates for 2–4 weeks.
- Historical analytics are gone. You won't be able to compare "this campaign vs. one from 8 months ago" across platforms.
- Unengaged subscribers may need re-permission. If someone hasn't opened a Wix email in 12+ months, some ESPs (and email compliance best practice) suggest a re-opt-in campaign rather than importing them blind.
- Design work has to be redone. Budget time or a developer to rebuild your best-performing templates rather than starting from generic defaults.
The Pre-Migration Email Checklist
Do these before you cancel your Wix subscription — not after:
- Export your full subscriber CSV, including consent status and signup date
- Screenshot or document your top 3 highest-converting email templates so they can be rebuilt
- Note the exact trigger logic for each automation (e.g., "abandoned cart email sends 1 hour after checkout abandonment, discount code included")
- Download your historical performance reports as a backup reference, even though they won't transfer directly
- Set a re-engagement campaign to run in your new platform within the first week of going live
Don't Let Email Be the Reason You Delay Your Migration
Email marketing feels like the hardest part of a platform switch, but it's actually one of the most predictable. There's a clear process, proven tools on the Shopify side, and a track record of stores rebuilding better flows than they had on Wix — not just equivalent ones. The real risk isn't losing your list. It's staying on a platform that's holding back the rest of your store just because the email piece feels intimidating.
TheDeki has handled dozens of Wix-to-Shopify migrations, including the email and customer data side that most agencies gloss over. We'll map your subscriber list, rebuild your automation flows in Shopify Email or Klaviyo, and make sure your sender reputation transition is handled correctly from day one.
